In Appignano, the tradition of ceramics has ancient origins! We have talked about it here: The ceramic of Appignano.
You can choose to join Marica in learning how to decorate pottery, or Gianni or Laura at the potter’s wheel, or even modelling clay to make your own handiwork!
You will be immersed in the art of handmade terracotta production.
It is said that in the 1500s an expert potter arrived in the village, giving impetus to the production of ceramic objects, an activity that had already started in part in the village and that developed thanks to the presence of clay suitable for pottery and the stream that provided the water to work it and to produce the colours for the decorations.
Appignano specialised in the production of everyday terracotta objects such as: jugs (vrùcche), basins (catì), pots (pignòle), water bottles (vorracce) and many other everyday objects as well as plates and glasses, of course. But we will not add anything! We let the craftsmen tell you the rest of the story!
Once you arrive in the village, you will be transformed into a potter and you can choose to devote yourself with Marica decorating a piece of pottery already turned, or join Gianni or Laura in making a piece on the potter’s wheel from the raw earth, or even modelling a dish by sticking your hands into the clay!
Whether you have chosen decoration or the creation of a piece on a potter’s wheel, you will need to bake your unique piece in the pottery oven! If you are late to pick it up in person, it will be sent home once it is ready!
